Alternate Payees/Recipients

When an employee participates in a benefit or retirement plan and he or she gets a divorce, you may be faced with a court order requiring you to take action in one of two situations:

  • The employee is ordered to provide medical benefits to a child who lives with the ex-spouse (in the form of a Qualified Medical Child Support Order, also known as a QMCSO).
  • An employee's retirement benefits are ordered to be paid to someone other than the employee (in the form of a Qualified Domestic Relations Order, also known as a QDRO).

If you receive either of those court orders, make sure that you discuss your responsibilities with your attorney as soon as possible.
